I have had enough, I am de-friending you

To de-friend or not to de-friend, that is the question.  500+ what does that mean?  You are a collector, trying to accumulate people who you hardly know as they will push your relationship count to the stratosphere.

To many to manage.  SO why do I collect these people.  I used to collect stamps.  As a 8 year old, you would steam off stamps from every letter that was received by the house hold.  You would even go and buy a whole bunch of stamps to pad out the collection.  After a wile you get rid of the worthless ones and you start collecting valuable stamps and discards the common ones.  Is Face Book the same.

Who is really in your circle of friends.  WHo do you want to get rid of?  WHy are they there?  I met them at a party but that was four years ago.  I want to friend them as they are cool.    They asked me and i can not say no.  Yes we have heard them all.

Hungry Jacks offered a free burger to anyone who de friended 10 friends on their FB, so if i take 9 bites out of my whopper you could be held in the same regard as that last bite.  Not very flattering.

It seems a lot of people are cleaning up their FB and just keeping their real friends.  Sorry

How many people have you got and how many do you want to drop?

  1. I am at 338 friends. There are probably about 10 - 30 in there that I would consider dropping. I tend not to add people that I don't really want to add in the first place. That is probably why I have had 14 Friend requests pending for a couple months now. The only reason I would really want to de-friend someone though is if their posts would start to clog up my feed, and i didn't really know them and wasn't interested. De-friending just seems like more effort to me, for no real value. Plus the more friends I have, the more likely a chance I have of finding a couch to crash on once I start travelling again. That is actually how I found a place to stay when I first came to Melbourne. I posted on Facebook saying that I was moving to Melbourne, and an old friend from highschool whom I hadn't spoken to in 3 years replied saying he had a room free.

  2. I think I have 300 or so, but need to get rid of some. The initial reason why I joined FB was because all my friends and family live overseas, and I saw it as a way to keep in touch, but as you know, you get requests, and I usually feel too bad ignoring them. But I have since found out that they don't know if you un-friend then so I think the time has come.

  3. I have 230ish and have become selective as to who i accept now like IvanD. The novelty when FB was new had people requesting anyone they that may have brushed past in the street, but like all new things the novelty does wear off.
I havent kicked anyone off yet but can see a time when it will happen. Now that FB is changing and 'circle of friends' will become more prominent i think there will be some churn on everyone's facebooks in the near future.

  4. I have 288, which is kinda reasonable. Like Ross, some are friends interstate and os that enables me to share a 'snaphot' into current life, although my mum just commented "way to go champ" on my profile pic, which is kind of embarrassing! I got on in the first place because all of my "30 something" age friends used the event function and I didn't want to be left out. My kids both have 1000+ and I'm not one of them (their choice not mine), which suggests that social networks will probably get bigger but be about 'who you know' rather that who you're necessarily mates with.

  5. Yeppo, I'm definately looking at spring cleaning my FB friends. I think I'm around the @Hubba-mark of the number of friends, if not a little more. But it's getting to the point where there's a lot of old contacts that I don't think I'd recognise or even stop on the street and have a chat, so no real point being friends online and barely being acquaintances. But on the other hand I think I'm too lazy to spring clean yet... I wonder what sort of system I will use to apply who and who will not get the chop? Tash
