Social Media is going Mobile

I was presented some research the other day from the lovely people at Sensis on the uptake of mobile and it's influence on how we access and use the web.   With the penetration of smart phones said to be  increasing at a rapid rate (currently 46% & estimated to be 60% by 2012) we find ourselves doing a lot of webs based activities while on the hop.  Mobile devices with their quick access to online services means that quite often they become the choice for webs browsing purely out of convenience of time.  The reduced screen real estate is overlooked as time to service is the real benefit here.

Social Networking drives daily mobile activity.  People are tweeting, FB'ing and doing all the things that they do on their web enabled devices.   The case builds for location based social networking.  Was foursquare to early guys?  Anyhow people who access SM via phone do it daily.

Building the story, yes there is a preference building for some to use SM via mobile rather than desktop options.

Once HTML5 builds we will see some awesome content, web based apps that will take the browsing experience of rich content much more accessible to mobile devices.

Hey guys, stop accessing the footy scores on you mobile and talk to your friends.  Explore your emotional side, reach out to others and share your feelings. Talk to your friends. Like Something. :-)

  1. These stats are great. It would be interesting how SM sites enable marketing (particularly advertising) to appear. I currently don't see any ads when I'm on FB using my phone.

  2. Thanks Chris - some great stats, and I know there are many others in that slide deck, too. Any chance you can get some of them into Chapter 8 for us? :)

    Keep up the good work.
