The Darker Side of Social Media

Just like the Race Riots in Sydney the horrors of London is a coordinated happening.  Blackberry Messenger was identified as the tool that coordinated the groups.  This raised additional issues as it is harder to monitor being a closed network. Check out the full SBS report...

Blackberry have been asked to open their network encryption for safety issues.  Blackberry the Hoods choice of phone, the drug dealers choice of phone and the terrorist choice of phone. Also used by lawyers and corperates who need the added data security.

Closed Vs Open networks?

Does it actually make a difference?

The Sydney riots were coordinated via SMS.  Should our social networks be moderated?  This issue goes beyond social channels.  ebay keep an eye on purchasing patterns that may tell us that one is shopping for necessary materials for the building of an explosive device (bomb).  I might have to varify the details of this story.

How much big brother is necessary to keep the crazies away from social media?

  1. Great post B. Sure is an interesting question, but if SM is not being used to coordinate these activities, my view is that there will be something else. SM is easy to blame because it is easy to monitor, what of these organisations revert back to the old days where they write letters to one another in code form, which could take law enforcement people months to figure out, will our mail then be checked?
As I stated in my post in yammer, this SM blame is BS, there are so many other ways these unwanted activities could be organised. SM is just an easy target.

  2. yeah.. there is no strict boundary for social media, because it is the platform that people could connect and exchange information with each other, so everyone has the opportunity and freedom to express their opinions. but social media is just the platform, which is a tool for people using. so the key thing, to decide if the information has the positive affection, should be people.

btw, i like the way you put your blog's name~

  3. like everything else...social media too has its ups and downs..but looking at these recent riots..we see how it can be harmful..social media is a free platform and a medium to xchange information so you really cant draw boundaries..if you draw boundaries on one..they will find other ways to exchange information...

  4. there's a billboard up on Punt Road that says something like "Don't Blame the Alcohol, Blame the People", same deal here I reckon. I've no dramas with police tracking them down using SMM 'experts' though, in fact there might be a future in that for us?!
