What is it all about?

Listen to what is being said.  It is just like joining in on any conversation in any social setting.

I thought i would start my blog with a question... What is it all about?

But before we launch into discussion, I would like to acknowledge that I have been abiding by RULE #1 of social media. Listen first.

I have not been lazy and left my first post till the very last minute. On the contrary I have been busy reading everyone's posts and then deciding on how I should join in on this conversation, what should I say and how should I language it.

My biggest contribution for this week will be  a public acknowledgement to how much I love Slide Share? This is an awesome place to view some pretty awesome presentations. Mind you there are some crap ones in there as well, but that is social media ... everyone has the opportunity to publish. Thank god we have the community to vote and weed out the less valuable contributions. That in essence is the value of social media.  Social media displays itself to an open public audience &  encourages interaction providing and presenting ideas with “social proof”.
Social proof  is essentially online word of mouth / endorsement.

This is a nice little presentation on social media & business which I thought I might share with you all. It is called obviously  Social Media for Business . This and many other interesting presentations can be found at Slideshare.

I look forward to learning together as we develop the conversation as a group.

  1. It is about anything and everything! I guess one of the problems with social media is that there is so much out there, that someone can easily be overwhelmed trying to find something that really interests them. Thus, one of the struggles when engaging in social media is how to make yourself stand out from the crowd. That Social Media for Business presentation was very interesting! Looks like I might find myself weeding through more presentations on slideshare in the next couple weeks, to see if I can find any more interesting presentations!

  3. When you look at some of the data out there (to come in future weeks), we'll see that many of us still spend more time consuming than creating content. But that is changing, as we all become more comfortable becoming content creators. More chaff to sort through? Probably! That's where some SM services can help, e.g. social bookmarking, where the higher quality content finds its way to the top of the heap, as more of us tag and rate it.

Looking forward to more ideas, questions and conversations over the coming weeks!

  5. Hey B
Well your first question is exactly what I hope to be able to answer at the end of this semester. We all have an idea of what it actually is, and more or less know what it's all about, but I hope I will have a much better understanding of what it's all about by the end of the semester.
That slideShare site is great! Thank you for posting that.
I am a very strong believer that SM is powerful, very powerful, so by being able to answer your question at the end of the semester, I will be able to harness some of those powers.
